My goal in starting Annapolis Sailing Solutions was to provide an opportunity for the new Captain and crew to get to know the boat and become comfortable before venturing out on their own. I will work closely with you and your family or crew to build a confident and competent sailing/cruising team.

The instruction will occur on your own boat, not in a classroom and will be tailored to your individual needs. We may, if the situation warrants, start with port and starboard but if you already have the basics we will quickly move on to sailing the boat.  Each member of your crew will be able to progress at their own speed but all will be able to handle the boat in an emergency. 

The training may include, but is not limited to, boat systems (engine, head, holding tanks, bilge pumps, air conditioning, shore power, batteries, potable water, transducers, propane, refrigeration, auto helm,etc.), boat handling, rules of the road, anchoring and sailing. Some additional topics could include navigation,VHF radio protocol, knots, line handling and GPS.  Unlike "shore based" schools, I charge by the boat and not the person.

I hold a US Coast Guard  Master Captain's License and have over forty years experience in both fixed keel boats and catamarans. I am willing to travel anywhere to give you a personal and unique training experience on your own boat and home waters. I will be happy to provide references.

Not sure what you need for safety and comfort?

Let me help you bring your boat up to Coast Guard Standards.  Navigation lights, proper life jackets, sounding devices, waste placards?  The list can be intimidating but with a little help, your boat can easily meet all requirements.  Are you deciding on a radar or chart plotter?  A lot of money can be spent on electronics you may not need.

Bought a new boat and need to get it home?

I am also available to deliver your boat to your home destination.  Better yet, come with me and learn to sail your new toy.  There is no substitute for experience and that is what you will be getting.  Hands on experience with a USCG Licensed Captain aboard to keep you out of trouble.

Need a refresher  course?

Spend a day with me and let me gently guide you and your sailing partner to sail more efficiently.  Have more fun and maybe increase your speed while we talk about sail shape, reefing and tacking.  Annapolis Sailing Solutions is all about having a good time, safely.

Would your sailing partner like to learn more about sailing?

Teaching someone close to you can be a difficult experience.  I recently completed a day on the water with several wives of boat owners.  They learned a lot, no one yelled at them, they found that their husbands were actually right sometimes, that, yes, it was important to spend the money on the chartplotter, and yes, they docked the boat.  At the end of the day they were all more confident that they could be an asset on the boat. 

I understand the difference between "Mars and Venus" and will demonstrate why there is only one Captain aboard.  There is a huge difference between me telling your spouse to "go into reverse immediately" and you telling them the same thing.  I will teach the difference between a "command" and a "request" and there will be no misunderstanding on your own boat again.  Please realize, however, that once your spouse becomes a competent sailor, your excuses or loud, unreasonable behavior will no longer be excusable:)
